Lace dresses and skirts

A trend round-up to inspire you for late-Summer 2010, but also a trend that you'd be amiss not to carry in to Autumn / Fall 2010 / 2011: lace dresses and lace skirts.
Right now you're thinking that this is nothing new. And you're right; it's an extension of the sheer trend that's has, for some time, firmly cemented itself as its own, independent trend. So what follows is, instead, more about how to wear the trend now, and how to set yourself apart from the masses - so that you can bring it forwards and into a new league.

Types of lace

There are many different types of lace, and various methods for producing it - so many that we won't go into them here. The long and short of it is this: it's now less about the stretch, allover lace, and more about antique-style lace. Fabrics that look like a more traditional needle or bobbin lace (even if they're machine made). Generally, go for a wider net, a more unique pattern, a sturdier fabric - rather than a thin stretch lace.

Left: wear less. Right: wear more.

How to wear it

The ultimate balance of lace in 2010 / 2011 is to be romantic but not over-girly; sensual but not over-suggestive. Like taking beautifully crafted lace that would have once been part of a garment and making it the only layer. The lace isn't an added detail of a garment, it is the garment. And thus we come to lace skirts and lace dresses. Dare to wear them without a slip underneath. Just keep the cut a little more relaxed or the hem a little longer to maintain that aforementioned balance.

Pacific Beach Club, Trabuco General Store, etc.

Next week I'm giving a talk about the rise and fall of the Pacific Beach Club, which once stood between Huntington Beach and Newport Beach. It's a tale of the early civil rights movement in Southern California. It's also a mystery involving Roaring '20s con-men, the KKK, towering Egyptian architecture, bathing beauties, and arson.  This program will be the Orange County Historical Society's "season kick-off" program, held at Sherman Gardens, 2647 E. Pacific Coast Hwy, Corona del Mar, Sept. 8, 6:30pm.

The program is free and open to the public. The event will begin at 6:30pm with an appetizer/dessert potluck (bring enough of something for six people if you'd like to participate). The program will begin at 7:30pm. Hope to see you there!

Want to own your own piece of back-country charm? The Trabuco General Store (1940) is now up for sale. Details appear in the Register.

Casa Romantica's aforementioned "Salute To Hollywood" exhibit opened this evening. Admission is $5. As I mentioned before, it will include some materials and artifacts of movies shot in Orange County from the recent O.C. Archives exhibit.

Fashion Plates from the McCall Company - 1901 - Afternoon Toilettes and Street Costumes

This page has much more helpful information. Dated May, 1901 it's out of McCall's Magazine and shows in color; McCall 6527 Misses' Guimpe Dress, McCall 6538 Ladies' Eton Jacket and McCall 6540 Ladies' Skirt. In gray tones; McCall 6562 Ladies' Shirt Waist, McCall 6532 Ladies' Skirt, McCall 6559 Misses' Jacket, McCall 6553 Misses' Skirt.
Take note of the way pleats and lace are used on the skirts, and the variety of collars. And while you are considering the serious underwear these women had to have on to get that silhouette, don't forget about how straight you'd have to stand to hold up those hats!

Hand Colored Engraved Fashion Plate - Party Ladies!

This plate has no information either, so once again I hope a kind reader fills us in. But it's clear they are at a party, maybe a masquerade ball? You won't be able to miss the aprons or the hats, but look closely and find the pockets, the purse, the bows and all that handwork. Wow.

Looking for a cool kick that delivers total support? etnies' RVM sneaker is the perfect choice. While its material mix offers low-key style, its higher cut and thick collar padding help provide ankle stability.

Finally, A Reason For Space Travel

Astronomers discover a planet made of diamond

Astronomers have spotted an exotic planet that seems to be made of diamond racing around a tiny star in our galactic backyard.
The new planet is far denser than any other known so far and consists largely of carbon. Because it is so dense, scientists calculate the carbon must be crystalline, so a large part of this strange world will effectively be diamond.

"The evolutionary history and amazing density of the planet all suggest it is comprised of carbon -- i.e. a massive diamond orbiting a neutron star every two hours in an orbit so tight it would fit inside our own Sun," said Matthew Bailes of Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne.

That's a lot of rough...
do you think that DeBeers is developing a space program?

I can't wait to see this collection

Meanwhile, according to IDEX, a 32.77 carat yellow diamond is expected to fetch some $18 million or so.
According to Christie’s, the diamond's color is highly saturated. “The vivid yellow literally blazes with color, unlike any yellow diamond I’ve ever seen,” said Rahul Kadakia, Christie’s Head of Jewelry for Christie’s Americas.
Yellow diamonds gain their color from nitrogen replacing carbon atoms in the diamond’s structure. The level of nitrogen determines the intensity of the color. The vivid yellow offered by Christie’s absorbed an unusually high level of aggregated nitrogen, giving it a superbly saturated golden yellow color, the firm said.
I won't be bidding...in case you were wondering.

Have a great weekend...and to my peeps on the east coast, stay dry!

Marine One, Diedrich Coffee, First American, etc.

One of the more interesting things to see at the Nixon Library in Yorba Linda is the presidential helicopter, Marine One, used by Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon and Ford. It's the same copter Nixon left the White House in the day he resigned. For a vehicle that size, the interior feels surprisingly cramped. But from the limed oak paneling to the retro carpeting to the ashtrays and Modern seats, it really feels like you're visiting the 1960s. The Heritage Museum of Orange County (remember our friends at the Kellogg House?) are now sponsoring a Speakers Series, and some of the talks sound pretty interesting. For starters, on Sept. 11th, Martin Diedrich will talk about the history of coffeehouses in Orange County, and on Oct. 9th, Parker S. Kennedy, Executive Chairman of First American Financial Corp. will talk about his company's long history and its dedication to preserving Orange County's heritage. I'm interested to hear both!

Been to check out the photos on the Orange County History Flickr group lately? (With over 4,000 images!) What could it hurt?
