1916 Christmas Gift Ideas for Boy Scouts

Want some ideas for the Boy Scouts in your life? Of course these "will be appreciated by every out-of-doors boy whether he be a Scout or not".

Trend alert; PLAID

 Style pantry going plaid+ plaid+ plaid

While many consider plaid to be a boyish print, the fashion-conscious woman can wear it and still look feminine doing so.

  1. 1
    Consider the fit. Women's flannel shirts can either be loose or fitted.
    • Loose shirts are more rugged and casual.

    • Fitted shirts are more stylish and easier to dress up.
  2. 2
    Make it casual. Match a loose, slightly oversized button-down plaid shirt with your favorite pair of jeans. Wear a clean yet casual shoe, like a flat or sneaker, and keep any jewelry or accessories to a minimum

  3. 3
    Dress it up. Wear a fitted plaid tunic or dress over a pair of dark leggings. Wrap a scarf or belt around your waist and add a few gold accessories, such as necklaces, bracelets, or earrings. Finish it off with a pair of fashionable heeled boots.

  4. 4
    Wear a "schoolgirl" skirt. Pick a plaid skirt with traditional colors, like red and black or navy and black. Pair it with a plain white button-down shirt. Wear a pair of black knee-high socks, and throw on some simple black flats.

  5. 5
    Spice things up with plaid accessories. Look for a plaid handbag, scarf, or belt. Add the accessory to a simple plaid-free outfit that only uses solid prints like to a white t-shirt and jeans.
     In all plaid is. A powerful print which could do very well in your wardrobe

    So do you agree?

Patriotic Thanksgiving Dinner Recipes from 1917

In case you are still looking for some ideas for that important meal, here are some suggestions from Modern Priscilla Magazine, November 1917. These will either be an inspiration or wear you out just reading how much work was involved because you want a "minimum of disturbance in changing courses without a maid". But don't worry, these are approved by the U.S. Food Administration!

Thompson's Universal Garment Cutter - 1896 - Part 2

Mrs. F. E. Thompson had quite the system here. These sold for $5.00 ($141.00 today) and they were used by home sewers and dress makers. That included very young girls, and mothers supporting families.

The system was based on accurate measurements. But complete instructions were given.

Here is one dress and the pattern pages you'd need to make it. There were pages for every garment, you looked at an index and it told you what pages you needed to use.

For the Basque (one or two darts);

For the Turn Down collar;
The Sleeve (two to choose from);
And then choose between two Skirts;

Just consider the work this took, there were limited fabric choices, no high powered machines like we'd use today, and imagine washing these!
